London, July 20; A 15-member delegation of the Youth
Parliament Pakistan visited the British House of Parliament in
London today and received briefings on How the British
Parliament Works. The delegation held meetings and
interactions with Lord Ahmed of Rotherham (Labour) and
Baroness Varma (Conservative) in addition to watching
proceedings of the House of Commons and House of Lords.
The Youth Parliament Pakistan Study Visit
to UK that is taking place from July 19-25, 2009, is
facilitated by PILDAT. The delegation includes Mr. Ahmed

Steering Committee is part of the delegation while Ms.
Aasiya Riaz, Joint Director, PILDAT and Mr. Hammal
Dostain, Programme Officer, PILDAT represent the Youth
Parliament Pakistan Secretariat. Ms. Anusha Rahman Khan,
MNA (PML-N), who is also part of the Youth Parliament Pakistan
Steering Committee, also joined the delegation’s meetings at
the Westminster today.
The delegation, which began the first day
of its activities at the Parliament, was given a detailed tour
of the Houses of Parliament, the history and significance
behind various Parliamentary traditions. Mr. Eliot Wilson,
Clerk Public Office Bill, briefed the delegation about how the
UK Parliament works and answered various questions. A briefing
on Parliamentary Standards and Privileges by Ms. Alda Berry,
Registrar of Members’ Interests, was also given to the
delegation.
The Youth Parliament Pakistan is initiated
and facilitated by PILDAT. Patterned after the National
Assembly of Pakistan, the Youth Parliament Pakistan consists
of 60 young men and women. The Youth Parliament follows its
own two-Party System, an elected Leaders of the House or Youth
Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, a Youth Cabinet, a
Shadow Cabinet and Standing Committees. The UK Foreign and
Commonwealth Office, through the British High Commission,
Islamabad, supports the Youth Parliament Pakistan initiative.
